In 1986, Gregory Widen wrote the screenplay that would change his life forever.
While still an undergrad film student at UCLA, he sold his script for Highlander for half a million dollars. The first film paved the way for three theatrical releases, one made-for-TV film, two TV series and an animated TV series.
The simple concept of immortals battling throughout the centuries with medieval swords to become the last man standing was new for moviegoers. The tagline for the movie was, "There can be only one" and Christopher Lambert was the one fighting for the title.
Lambert plays a highlander of Scottish descent born in the 16th century. The fact that Lambert was French and played a Scottish character has always fascinated me. Lambert’s accent was unique for the part, but he made it work.
He played the part to perfection and had notable parts in other movies, but the Highlander is the film that he will be remembered for. Maybe it is because he played opposite Sean Connery and held his own.
There is a reason the film became a cult classic and the two actors are the ones that made that possible. I am thankful that Lambert and Connery worked together to create something unique.
If you are looking for fantasy and a movie with a killer soundtrack from Queen, Highlander might fit the bill.
