Have you ever watched a Telenovela? Until recently, I had never even heard of the word Telenovela. By definition, a Telenovela is a soap opera produced primarily in Latin America. A friend recommended I watch "Jane the Virgin" on Netflix and I thought I would give it a try. Occasionally, I like to step out of my comfort zone and watch something different in a genre that I do not normally visit. Jane the Virgin" falls into several categories such as comedy, drama and the main one being Telenovela.
To say Jane the Virgin is a soap opera on steroids would be a correct assumption. The writers and producers took the concept of Telenovela and provided the viewer with every clich矇 that is associated with a Spanish soap opera. Each episode has a cliffhanger like you would see in Game of Thrones. You have no choice, but to tune into the next episode to see the bizarre character development.
The actors and actresses of the show push boundaries because they are over acting for the sake of comedy. You also have to remember that the focus is on Spanish so you will be reading a lot of subtitles. I am sure if you are fluent in Spanish the context would be hilarious for certain dramatic scenes. If you are looking to brush up on your Spanish and have a few laughs, you should check out this Telenovela.
