Kevin Lazzari | Special to the 51
Once in a while, I like to rewatch a classic, and this week I decided to check out “Jaws.” You may not consider it a classic by traditional standards, but 566,000 people rated it eight out of 10 on imdb.com. For the time period, it was way ahead of itself for production value. The first scene alone was worth the price of admission if you like horror effects. The music cued to the visual effects was iconic. “Duuuunnnn duun… duuunnnnnnnn dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn dunnnn,” and life was the never the same again.
I remember reading the book by Peter Benchley in 1974 and thinking I will never swim in the ocean. Then I watched the movie in 1975 and thought the ocean really is a no go. The fact that I lived in Jasper and there was no ocean for 800 kilometres really did not play into my irrational fear. Fast forward to years later of scuba diving in Hawaii and Australia, I still have a healthy fear of sharks.
My friend Keith and I drove off Julian Rocks in Australia where a guy on his honeymoon was killed by a Great White Shark two years before we drove there. To say it was a stressful dive would be an understatement. Guess what kind of shark is the star of the movie, “Jaws”? The movie still haunts me to this day, and I have the geniuses of “Jaws” to thank for that condition.
If you want to watch a Great White Shark doing his thing, “Jaws” is the movie for you.
