Taika Waititi's latest film, Jojo Rabbit went from a controversial idea to an Oscar winner.
He had pushback for the subject matter, but he believed in his vision to the point he optioned the book himself.
The movie is based on the book Caging Skies, which his mom thought should be a movie.
Following the advice of his mom he committed to his vision by directing, writing, producing, and co-starring in his greenlighted project.
Taika took a huge risk by casting Roman Griffin Davis, who had never acted before. The gamble paid off because Roman was incredible and meshed well with Taika style of acting.
To round out the film Taika cast Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson and newcomer Thomasin McKenzie. Each actor played to their strengths and the movie works because of all their unique personalities.
The film is a departure from Thor: Ragnarok which Taika directed in 2017. Taiki proves that he is a solid director and can pick his own projects without worrying about the subject matter.
Mel Brooks is quoted as saying, Its really a terrific and eloquent and beautiful picture. Brooks has always been known to tackle controversial subject matter and use humor to get his message across. Waititi uses the same formula as Mel Brooks and the message is loud and clear.
There is a constant theme throughout the film, but there are hidden themes that go unnoticed unless you are aware and looking for them.
It is a movie that evokes emotion that some viewers will find offensive, but if you keep an open mind you might find it entertaining and educational.
