Once in a while, someone will recommend a movie that they think I should watch. I have a very eclectic taste, so I often consider the suggestions that are given to me. 鈥淟ars and the Real Girl鈥� was one of the movies that made the list to view one day. I checked on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, and the ratings were solid. The movie came out in 2007, and it was a film that flew under the radar as most indie flicks do. As far as independent films go, 鈥淟ars and the Real Girl鈥� is in a category of its own.
Without the solid acting of Ryan Gosling, that movie would have been a disaster. Gosling steps up to the challenge of delivering a brilliant performance. I was intrigued by his interpretation of his character and it was spot on. You will probably never see Gosling in another role similar to this particular film. There is zero violence and there is no action whatsoever, which goes against what we are used to seeing in his films. I am sure when he first read the script he must have thought seriously of even taking the part.
The film is about a loner who finds a girlfriend on the Internet and makes arrangements to bring her to his conservative little midwestern town. Lars is the loner and his new girlfriend Bianca is like no one he has ever dated. Lars and Bianca are the talk of the town, because their relationship is unique in every aspect. The town accepts Bianca鈥檚 uniqueness, and she becomes a loved member of the community. The awkward moments between the couple and the folks of town are what make this one of the best indie films ever made.
