If you are looking for a period piece, Tom Hanks newest movie, 51°µÍø of the World, will transport you back in time. The film is set in 1870 and focuses on Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who makes a living traveling town to town reading newspapers. Through a set of circumstances, Captain Kidd is entrusted to deliver an orphaned girl to your Aunt and Uncle. The journey is 400 miles filled with adventure and hardship.Â
The movie sets itself apart from the typical cookie-cutter westerns because Tom Hanks is at the helm. When Hanks plays a part in any movie I have watched, he becomes the character. In this film, he is the embodiment of a civil war veteran. The part of the orphan girl played by Helena Zengel is also done with perfection. To be able to act beside Tom Hanks and not break character is something that is rarely done with someone as young as Zengel. She will be an actress to watch in future projects.
When you are watching this film you feel like you are there tasting the dust on the trail. The sets are bigger than life and after a bit of research I found out why. The film was not produced on a Hollywood soundstage. It was filmed on location in the vast wilderness of New Mexico. Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel definitely thrived in this foreign environment. The movie is billed as a western, but it is more than that. Thank you, Tom Hanks, for another great movie.
