The title of the movie pretty well sums up what you are going to watch. Considering the time period is 1986, you know you will be in for some outrageous comedy. I often forget there was a formula for comedies that were done in the ‘80s. If you have watched Caddyshack, Animal House, Meatballs and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, you know how the movie will play out. There is always the evil land developer with a son that will help at all costs. The gang of misfits that will try to stop the real estate mogul from destroying the town. Add in a race and whoever wins takes the trophy and all the spoils.
John Cusack is the star, and for being one of his first movies, he definitely owned the part. It might have been because he starred opposite Demi Moore. Their characters made the film a success and we know why they became successful in their future careers. The wildcard of the film is Robert Francis “Bobcat” Goldthwait. He adds to the comedy in ways that no other actor could. Bobcat is so far over the top we never know what gag he will pull off next. Without Bobcat, the ‘80s would have missed out on a great comedian.
I cannot think of a better comedy that represents summertime in the ‘80s. The movie is a tribute to the eighties and should not be missed if you liked that time period.
