Kevin Lazzari | Special to the 51
Once in a while, I will discover a show that I did not know existed. That is the case when it came to the Canadian-made show, “Private Eyes.” I stumbled across it by accident, and it turned out in my favor. I am a sucker for detective shows like “Magnum P.I.,” “Kojak” and “Columbo.” I especially like them if they have an old school twist. “Private Eyes” has that authentic gumshoe feel with each episode having a complicated case to solve.
Jason Priestley is the star, and I discovered he is Canadian. I always thought he was from the States because of “Beverly Hills, 90210.” The show's premise is that retired hockey player Matt Shade is hired by Angie Everett to help her with her detective agency. The show is shot in Toronto with the two solving cases that no one else can solve. The dynamic duo is impressive with their crime fighting abilities, and each week, they help someone get out of a difficult situation.
I loved the show for being Canadian and for using Toronto as the backdrop. The best thing about the show is Toronto is not disguised as another city. We get to see Toronto at its best, and in some cases, we get to see its underbelly. The creators got everything right in this Canadian production, and we should be proud. If you are an amateur sleuth, you have to check out “Private Eyes.”
