There have been a few versions of the Christmas Carol and each has its own merit. Â
If you are looking for comedy Scrooged is the one that you should watch. Bill Murray pulls out all the stops in this holiday classic that spares no limits when it comes to comedy. Murray to me was the 80s physical comedian of the 80s. There was Charlie Chaplin and Peter Sellers before him, but Bill was the guy in my youth that made me laugh. Whoever thought of putting Bill Murray in this version of the Christmas Carol must have been a mad genius.
Then add to the insanity they cast actors like Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Robert Mitchum (River of No Return), Jamie Farr (M*A*S*H), Lee Majors (Six Million Dollar Man), Bob Goldthwait (Police Academy), and Carol Kane (Taxi) to name a few. With each and every actor the slapstick comedy never stops with Bill’s timing being flawless. I personally think Goldthwait and Kane stole the show and added to Murray’s performance.
I do not think Charles Dickens would have approved this version of his story because limits were pushed. There are a few lines that are not politically correct but we must remember it was 1988 when the movie was produced.
Bill Murray takes us on a journey of self discovery for 91 minutes and his message becomes very clear. You will have to watch the movie to find out what that message is.
Thank you Bill for making the holidays better.
