In 1998, The Big Lebowski broke the mold for all comedies to follow.
Well, maybe not all comedies, but ones that would be categorized as cult classics. The film flew under the radar at theaters and the unthinkable happened. It became a cult classic because of its release on DVD.
It never has been fully understood why the movie became so popular after its theatrical release.
Why would a movie about bowling, restitution for a rug, a kidnapping, Jeff Bridges as the Dude, an insane twisted plot rise to the top of the comedy charts?
I think because it was written and directed by the Coen brothers. Joel and Ethan know how to make a comedy that will leave you laughing at all the wrong spots.
The absurdity is what makes their movies so enjoyable to watch. Think of Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Raising Arizona, and you get the picture. Their brand of comedy is very unique and often leaves the audience questioning their judgement.
The Big Lewbowski further entrenched its cult status by launching an annual festival called the Lebowski Fest. The festival features a screening of the film, live music, and a bowling party attended by fans of the movie.
To add to the madness many are dressed as characters from the film. You can even get ordained at dudeism.com if that is your cup of tea.
I know of no other film that has inspired a philosophy based on a fictitious character in a movie. I applaud the Coen brothers for launching a revolution of comedy.
