I have said it a few times, and I still stand by the philosophy that a title is everything for a movie. The title has to grab the audience with only a few words. With a few simple words, the film company is advertising their entire film. What if the title is flat and the prospective viewer is disappointed by the choice? When it comes to a western, I think the title is the most important aspect for marketing the project. Look at westerns from the past, and you know there was some serious thought into those carefully chosen words. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and High Noon are just a few I can think of that have a punch for advertising. The Harder They Fall has a title that is worthy of being a true western.
One of the genres that is sacred to me is the western. I grew up watching westerns with my dad, and we both could not wait till a new one was released. CBC had a late movie night on Saturdays, and the time slot was called Stardust Theatre. I watched some of the best westerns ever made with Stardust Theatre. Spaghetti westerns were the best because of their rawness. Clint Eastwood made a career from that category. It has been years since a decent western has been produced. I cannot remember in the last ten years that had the wow factor. Then I watched The Harder They Fall and I went, Finally, someone knows how to make a proper western.
Jeymes Samuel is the guy that made it all happen by knowing the true essence of what a western should be. The camera work is outstanding, and you feel like you are riding into town on a horse. Samuel is now my favorite director, because he really gets in when it comes to making a western. If you like westerns, his film is a must watch.
