Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons star in this powerful drama based on the world of mathematics. It would seem no small feat to make math interesting to the general population and make a movie about the subject. Somehow, the two actors captured the essence of their two different worlds and found a common ground with pure mathematics. The film delves into how different each individual is and how they overcame their differences by relating to the complex world of mathematical formulas.
The story is based on the life of Srinivasa Ramanujan and actual events that took place in the early 1900s. Ramanujan theories were groundbreaking and mathematicians to this day still use his formulas. His unconventional methods in pure mathematics inspired research for generations to come. Careers have been built on his work and his lost notebook discovered in 1976 caused a great excitement with mathematicians of the world.
Matt Brown wrote the screenplay to entertain us about a subject that is rarely visited in the area of cinema. Brown captures the spirit of academia through his crafted words and takes the viewer on an exploration of a man that changed history. Without the film I would not have known about Ramanujan and his contribution to mathematics.
I found myself fascinated by the subject matter and enjoyed the performances of Patel and Irons. The thing that impressed me most about the film is I now understand why an individual would make a career of mathematics. If you are looking for something different I would recommend this diamond in the rough.
