“The Sandlot” falls into the category of family entertainment. There is no violence, and things are not blowing up every five minutes. Sometimes it is nice to watch a movie with a great story and a theme that is timeless. Baseball is weaved throughout the entire film with secondary stories running parallel to it. There have been multiple movies featuring a baseball theme, but “The Sandlot” is uniquely different. The time period is 1962, and the movie revolves around a group of kids that live and breathe baseball.
Scotty Smalls is new to town, and unfortunately he is clueless when it comes to baseball. As circumstances would have it, he stumbles across a group of kids who play baseball in a sandlot. Smalls is fascinated by the game and the rowdy group that plays it. Luckily for him, the neighborhood baseball champ takes him under his wing. Scotty’s life instantly changes once he is accepted and starts to learn what the meaning of baseball is all about.
The characters that make up the film are hilarious, and there is a dog called the Beast that pretty well steals the show. The writers went beyond what is required for a family film, and the results speak for themselves. “The Sandlot” is a film that should be on everyone's list of must watch. Baseball, a treehouse, a rival baseball team, a dog called the Beast, a local swimming pool are just a few reasons to watch this classic baseball movie.
