In 1999, David Chase created the hit show “The Sopranos.” We as viewers could not get enough of the show, and it lasted for six seasons. The premise of the show is about an Italian family that has its roots in the mafia. Anyone watching TV in 1999 knew the name Tony Soprano. New Jersey is the backdrop with a slice of the mob lifestyle. Chase was a Jersey boy, so what he got right he got right about organized crime in Jersey. What he got wrong he embellished for the sake of the show.
If you want to make a show about crime and have it slightly authentic, you have to hire actors and actresses that can play the part. That is exactly what the casting agents did for “The Sopranos.” If you look up any of the names when you run the credits, you will see they are all Italian surnames. A few of those actors even grew up in New Jersey, so they know the deal and what the show was trying to portray.
The show goes beyond the borders of violence and shows the idiosyncrasies of famiglia. Tony Sopranos tried to navigate his immediate family and his mob family to the point that he needed a therapist in the series. That is the rub because would a mafia Don get away with seeing a psychiatrist without getting whacked? You can judge for yourself to see if Tony Soprano is good enough to hide his personal issues from the syndicate. The show is molto bene, so check it out if you like crime dramas.
