The latest movie to arrive on physical media is The Witches after a turbulent year in the film industry. There have been few blockbuster movies released due to what happened in 2020. The Witches marks a turning point because we are finally getting to view films that were held back from the studios. For financial reasons certain films were delayed from the public and now the tide is starting to shift.

Fans have been waiting for the release of The Witches with anticipation for the mere fact that it is a movie based on one of Roald Dahl’s works. The film is the second adaptation of one of Dahl’s short novels. If you are not familiar with Dahl he also wrote James and the Giant Peach as well as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The Witches is probably the darkest version of the three because of its content and elements related to its story.

I found myself slightly disappointed with The Witches because I set the bar pretty high. The 1990 film version has always been a favourite for the simple reason Anjelica Huston was spectacular as the diabolical head witch. In the 2020 version Anne Hathaway does a fantastic job of recreating the part, but Huston wins for her fluid performance. In Hathaway’s defence she had pretty big shoes to fill because no one could have done it better than Hudson.

If you are looking for a dark fantasy with elements of comedy and missed out on the original film maybe give The Witches a try.
