Letter: Now is the time to close Patricia Street to vehicles

Dear editor,

It is time. In the last month, we have see extraordinary measures put into place to get ahead of the virus that causes COVID 19.

The impact on Jasper was swift and apparent within hours.

As we move forward to our 'busy season' and restrictions are slowly relaxed we must plan our responsibility to ensuring we maintain our role in combating the spread.  We already see more individuals enjoying the long awaited spring weather.

I propose a temporary closure of Patricia street from Hazel to Miette to vehicles.

I do know there has always been apprehension and vocal opposition to this. I do expect those same opinions from the same but with the current and extra ordinary situation, the proposal must be looked at again.

Social distancing of two metres is wider than our sidewalks. With the rising temperatures, we are all heading outdoors.

When restrictions are slowly lifted, we must adapt to the new normal and limitations of crowd density.

The bus loading zone and the motorcycles are better located at the train station now that Greyhound is not servicing our town or an alternative.

Deliveries are suppose to be done from the alleyways as laid out in the development regulations. A few hundred yards for a coffee is not an unreasonable burden for most.

As for the TGP, there are imaginative solutions. Creation of designated parking out of the lane of traffic on Patricia street is an option, allowing two way traffic from Miette to TGP parking may be another.

Or no accommodation on the street but a time limit of 15 minutes on Miette. I am sure the council and the community can come up with many more and better proposals.

While this temporary experiment is put into place, I also propose that the sidewalk patios be enlarged to also accommodate the social distancing and bicycle racks be placed along the street to also allow for proper distancing.
This can be done quickly and more importantly in this climate, without major costs.

Placement of a few flower beds, and temporary signage may be all it takes.

It can also be taken down quickly if we find it not working.

I just heard Edmonton reduced the lanes on some streets to allow distancing. That may be an idea for Connaught Drive.

I propose we try. Try to find a new normal as we all go through the biggest impact on the community anyone has seen.
