Indie-pop artist Lucette (Lauren Gillis) turns her experiences with fleeting romance and isolation into easy-listening and heartfelt songs for her sophomore album Deluxe Hotel Room. Born and based in Edmonton, she spoke with the 51°µÍø’s Nicolle Hodges about her upcoming show.
51°µÍø: Lucette is a nickname?
Lucette: Lucette is actually my grandmother's name. I adopted it as a stage moniker thinking that maybe I'd start a band. Never happened. People call me by my real name, Lauren. Or LoLo as a nickname.
Fitz: What are you looking forward to about your show in Jasper? And any memories you have out this way from growing up nearby?
Lucette: It's my first time playing there. I actually grew up going to Jasper every year for Easter with my family. It's a tradition that started when my dad was two. I love Jasper and the culture of the mountains, in general. I've always said I'd move to a mountain town one day.
Fitz: If you were to describe the perfect mood to listen to your music, what would that be?
Lucette: My music is mostly pretty mellow. There are some more upbeat songs and some really dark ones. For me, sad songs can make me feel better about things, so I feel like it's really up to the person. But overall, in reference to my new album, it was born out of a multitude of experiences so I'd say there's a little bit for everyone?
Fitz: Do you write the songs - and if so - do you relive the feelings that inspired you to write them when you're performing?
Lucette: There are definitely a lot of moments on the record inspired by loneliness and loss of romance. But when I'm performing I wouldn't say I go back to the specific moment, if anything I connect with the feeling of getting through that time through the songs. I'm feeling pretty good nowadays. And yes, I do write the songs.
Fitz: What's the philosophy you live by?
Lucette: Be grateful, be kind, eat good food, treat people equally, and be open to new experiences.
Fitz: Tell me about a song from Deluxe Hotel Room that you are particularly happy with?
Lucette: I think my favourite song on the new album is Out of the Rain. I started writing it while I was touring solo and feeling super lonely. I think it's a song that a lot of people can relate to. Plus, it has an epic sax solo which was so fun to record.
