Mayor shares condolences following first COVID death in Jasper

"On behalf of all in the community, I extend deepest sympathies to the family, loved ones, and friends for your loss," said Ireland.

"In this close, tight knit community the loss will be broadly felt so I say with confidence, that a community stands ready to support the family through this time of grief and sorrow.

"Our thoughts are with the family, and with those health care professionals who undoubtedly undertook personal risk to provide care and comfort and continue to do so."

This first death to COVID in Jasper was made known today (April 6) when Alberta Health updated its coronavirus .

There have been seven cases confirmed overall in the municipality, and one recovery.

"I cannot conceive of a more painful and poignant reminder of our continuing commitment to do all we can to prevent the spread of this deadly virus," said Ireland.

"As a sign of respect and condolence to the family, please, everyone, follow public health directives.

Steps you can take

To protect yourself and others:

  • practice 
  • wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow
  • avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
  • avoid travel outside Canada
  • watch for COVID-19 symptoms: cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose or sore throat

Follow :

  • 14 daysif you recently returned from travel outside of Canada or are a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, plus an additional 10 days from the onset of symptoms, should they occur, whichever is longer
  • 10 daysminimum if you develop any COVID-19 symptoms, or until the symptoms resolve, whichever is longer
