Jasper residents and visitors alike embrace winter in the mountains. Parks Canada loves this season that brings out the best in scenery and activities in and around Jasper. 

Jasper National Park is pleased to be offering a variety of special programming during Jasper in January (January 17 to February 2, 2020) and Family Day Weekend (February 14 to 16, 2020).

Jasper in January Street Festival

Location: 500 Connaught Drive

Date: January 25

Don’t miss the Parks Canada booth at the Jasper in January ATCO Street Festival! Take a picture with Parka and learn about avalanche safety. On our avalanche board, all ages can see firsthand how snow layers, slope, terrain, and triggers contribute to avalanche risk. In our avalanche rescue challenge, you will use avalanche rescue equipment to find a buried target. All equipment is provided but you can also bring your own transceiver to practice.

Dark Sky Snowshoe

Location: Pyramid Lake Parking Lot P7

Date: January 17, 24 and 31 and February 14

Time of program: 7 p.m. (February 14: 8 p.m.)

Immerse yourself and experience the star rich dark skies or moonlit skies of Jasper National Park. Learn all about some of the nocturnal adaptations that help the animals of the park (including us) see in the dark.

Mountain Pine Beetle Adventure

Location: Valley of Five Lakes

Date: January 18, 25 and February 1, 15

Time of program: 11 a.m.

Why are there so many dead trees in Jasper? If you’re asking yourself this question, then this is the activity for you. Explore the pine forests of Jasper with a park interpreter and discover the good and bad side of this tiny endemic insect with a big punch. Be prepared for walking or snowshoeing.

Caribou Snowshoe

Location: Moose Lake Loop, Maligne Lake

Date: Date: January 19, 26 and February 2, 16

Time of program: 11 a.m.

Take a peek into Caribou habitat at Maligne Lake Moose Lake Loop. We’ll learn about this species at risk and what Jasper National Park is doing to help the Woodland Caribou.

All programs are free and snowshoes are provided. Please dress warm. All programming is subject to change.
