The Jasper PeeWee Bears played two of their three round robin games this past weekend.
On Saturday they got up well before the break of dawn to catch a bus to Killam, AB. For those who don't know, Killam is 530km east of Jasper.
The Killam team is called the Battle River Knights and the Jasper Bears rolled up ready for combat.
In the first period, the Bears peppered shot after shot at the Knights' netminder with nothing getting past him. Until with four minutes remaining in the period, Jackson Irwin passed the puck to the front of the net and Carson Campbell knocked it in, finally getting Jasper on the board.
The Knights came out battling in the second period, but it didn't take long for the Bears to regain control. And at the ten minute mark, Callum Campbell capitalized on a power play, with Drew Kovacs getting the helper. Jackson Irwin then got Jasper's third goal, one minute later, making it 3-0 after forty minutes.
Up until this point, Jasper's goalie, Brady Campbell had kept the door shut. But the home team finally found the key and opened that door, four minutes into the third. Making a few more incredible saves, Brady made sure that would be the only goal Battle River would score on 19 shots. Jackson Irwin finished off this game with one more goal for Jasper. Bode Hofhuis and Seth Johannesson getting the helpers on the 4-1 goal.
After the whole team was named The Real Deal, they got back on the bus heading home to Jasper. Special thanks goes out to Richard from SunDog for doing such a great job transporting the PeeWees to and from their game, safely.
The Fort Saskatchewan Rangers came to town on Sunday, and this game was a real barn burner.
Opening up the scoring was Jackson Irwin off a pass from Carson Campbell. Shortly after that, the Rangers answered back. Irwin then scored again with Seth Johannesson getting that apple. In true back and forth fashion, Fort Saskatchewan scored again, followed by Irwin's hat-trick goal, assisted by Carson Campbell and Paige Hugie. Casey Peel then made it 4-2 with some help from Drew Kovacs to end the first period.
The Rangers busted out of the gates in the second with a goal right away. Only to be answered by the Bears' Callum Campbell, assisted by Irwin and Kovacs. One minute later, Fort Saskatchewan would strike back and then again, Callum sniped another one with help from Georgia Bell and Drew Kovacs. Can you guess what happened next? You got it. The Rangers came right back and got another one. Let me tally that for you. By the end of the second, the score was 6-5 for the Bears.
In the third period, Jasper proved that they were in it to win it. First, Jackson Irwin scored off a pass from Carson Campbell. Then Carson Campbell, from Jackson Irwin and Seth Johannesson. Jasper gave up one goal to the Rangers after that, and then just like before, Carson, from Jackson and Seth. With less than a minute left in the game Drew Kovacs sealed the deal with some help from Bode Hofhuis. The final score was 10-6 for the Bears, with Jackson Irwin being named The Real Deal.
Come on down to the Jasper Arena on Saturday March 7 at 1 p.m. for the last game of this round robin play-off series against the Ponoka Stampeders
