Got a nice snap while in Jasper? Photographers have the opportunity to submit their work for the chance to win more than $1,000 in prizes and receive recognition.
The inaugural Celebrate Winter Photo Contest will be open from Feb. 15 to Mar. 15 and will be divided into three categories: winter landscapes, winter recreation and winter life in Jasper.
The competition is organized by the Association of Jasper Climbers and the Jasper Community Team Society, with promotional support from the 51.
“I know everyone’s got an interesting experience of winter in general but also a winter in COVID,” Sarah Ray, founder and chair of the Association of Jasper Climbers. “The main goal is definitely not to make any kind of profit off of it. It’s just to highlight Jasper talent, humour and beauty. It’s so lovely here that I’m hoping we can get some cool photos.”
In February 2020, a group of climbers formed the Association of Jasper Climbers to promote and support all disciplines of climbing in Jasper and surrounding areas through hosting events and helping with climbing-related projects.
The Association of Jasper Climbers is now using this photo contest as a community-wide, COVID-safe way to promote itself, although submissions don’t have to feature climbing.
“We want a stake in the community as a whole,” Ray said. “We hope to get a bunch of beautiful, Jasper-specific winter photos out of it. What a sweet bonus.”
As the Association of Jasper Climbers is still a new group, the Jasper Community Team Society is helping out through its existing networks and established presence in town.
“It’s a project which really helps with community engagement and also getting people out and it’s just been such an isolating time with COVID,” said Hannah Basso, co-chair for the society.
“We got a pretty creative community here in Jasper and we’ve seen some wonderful photographs so this should be a really exciting and interesting project.”
The contest is open to amateurs. Entrants can submit their photos into whichever category they deem the most relevant.
“I wanted them to be separate because everyone has different experiences of winter,” Ray said. “Some people aren’t into the outdoors, some people love the sunrises and sunsets and I thought it would be a lost opportunity to judge them all together.”
A panel of judges will determine the three winners and potentially some runner-ups, whose photos will be published in the 51 and who will receive prizes from sponsors, including framed prints of photos from Tekarra Color and gift certificates from local businesses.
