The late actor Kirby Morrow will continue to be honoured through a new scholarship designed to help first-year students follow in his footsteps.

Kirby grew up in Jasper and went on to have a successful acting career, including extensive voicework for animation, and served as a former Vancouver Acting School instructor.

He died unexpectedly last year at age 47.

Casey Morrow said his brother Kirby was always willing to help people get into the industry, and this scholarship was a continuation of that desire.

Anything that got Kirbys attention, he would have liked for sure, Casey joked.

The Kirby Morrow Memorial Scholarship will offer two awards valued at $750 each, which will be applied directly to tuition.

The scholarship went live late June and is open for applications until midnight on Sept. 30.

Applicants are asked to submit a TikTok-style short video, no more than three minutes long, that demonstrates their passion for their area of study and how this scholarship will help them pursue their dreams.

Ive got a committee of Kirbys friends who are all industry people, Casey said.

We just have to watch some videos, have some fun and give some money away.

In addition, applicants must be an Alberta or British Columbia resident, enrolled in the first year of an undergraduate degree or diploma program within one of these provinces and study in the performing arts: theatre, theatre arts, drama, film, radio, television, animation or script writing.

Kirby had a huge impact on so many lives, according to the website of the Calgary Foundation, which is managing the scholarship.

He lived to give to others. This Legacy Scholarship is dedicated to helping dreamers like Kirby get quality education in the Performing Arts. By creating a lasting legacy in his name, maybe someday the Scholarship will help another Kirby from some small town realize their dreams.

The scholarship will continue to receive donations through and the Calgary Foundation.

Were hoping as the fund grows over time, (well) do more than two scholarships, Casey said.

Were excited to see where this goes and what we can do with it.
