The Jasper RCMP have recently received a significant increase in driving complaints in school zones.
With winter season upon us, road conditions are slowly deteriorating.
In addition, our school zones in Jasper are a high pedestrian traffic area.
As such we must all do our part in promoting a safe environment for students to get to school and remain out of harm’s way.
The following safety tips can be used as a reminder on how to keep roadways safe for pedestrians in our school zones:
- The speed limit within school zones is 30km/h. Driver’s must not exceed this limit and should always use caution when driving in these zones.
- Drivers must obey stop signs at all times.
- Drivers are not permitted to pass or attempt to pass another vehicle travelling in the same direction within a school zone when the zone is in effect.
- Drivers must continuously watch for, and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- When pedestrians are crossing, drivers must come to a complete stop and ensure that the pedestrians have completely cleared the road before proceeding.
- U-turns are not to be completed at designated pedestrian crosswalks.
On a similar note, the Jasper RCMP have noticed an increase in stop sign infractions located at the intersection of Turret Street and Elm Avenue.
This is especially concerning considering the factors noted above such as; the amount of children, as well as pedestrian and vehicle traffic in this area during school hours.
While the Jasper RCMP is committed to conducting patrols in this area during school hours, our hope is that we can come together as a community in order to maintain a safe environment for those going to and from school.
We encourage anyone who has witnessed a driving infraction in the area to contact the local Jasper RCMP Detachment in order to report the infraction.
