Three candidates for mayor and 11 candidates for councillor have filed their nomination papers for the next municipal election.

Nominations closed at noon on Sept. 20, and the candidates had 24 hours to withdraw in writing.

The official list of candidates was issued 24 hours from the close of nomination.

The municipal election is scheduled for Oct. 18, where Jaseperites will vote for one mayor and six councillors.

Mayor Richard Ireland, who has held office since the municipality became incorporated 20 years ago, is seeking re-election.

He is challenged by Paul Butler, who currently sits on council, and Basil Byrd.

Three incumbent councillors are also up for re-election: Rico Damota, Helen Kelleher-Empey and Scott Wilson.

Bert Journault and Jenna McGrath, who are currently councillors, did not file their nomination papers and will thus not run for re-election.

The candidates for mayor are:

  • BUTLER, Paul
  • BYRD, Basil
  • IRELAND, Richard (incumbent)

The candidates for councillor are:

  • ARKINSTALL, Thomas
  • DAMOTA, Rico (incumbent)
  • HALL, Wendy
  • KELLEHER-EMPEY, Helen (incumbent)
  • LETTNER, Stephanie
  • MCLACHLAN, Elizabeth (Beth)
  • MELNYK, Ralph
  • ROBINSON, Anita
  • STOCKFISH, Jason Richard
  • WAXER, Kathleen
  • WILSON, Scott (incumbent)

Election day is at the Jasper Activity Centre from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18

There is also an advance vote on the two Wednesdays prior, specifically Oct. 6 and 13, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jasper Activity Centre.

Special ballots are available for those out of town or unable to attend in person due to physical limitations.

Editor's note: Jason Richard Stockfish's name has been added to the list of candidates for councillor. The returning officer says his nomination papers were initially not accounted for at the close of nominations due to a clerical error.
