VIA Rail has announced special health and safety measures it is taking to help control the spread of COVID-19.

VIA Rail has announced special health and safety measures it is taking to help control the spread of COVID-19.

The train company, which brings hundreds of passengers to and through Jasper every week, is deploying extra preventive and reactive measures to its corporate 'Illness Control Plan'.

"Health and safety measures of our passengers and employees is our top priority and we are focusing our efforts accordingly," said Cynthia Garneau, president and CEO of VIA Rail.

"At this point, all hands are on deck. "

Garneau said all employees, whether in train stations, on board, in maintenance or call centres, are trained and informed on what they have to do to for safety and prevention.

Masks and anti-viral products like hand sanitizer are being distributed on board trains and in stations.

Daily cleaning and disinfection at train stations has been increased with special attention being paid to hard surfaces.

And VIA said it regularly and thoroughly cleans all hard services in its cars including vestibules, washrooms, tray tables, arm rests and doors.

Flexibility is being offered for clients who choose to change their travel plans, as passengers can cancel or modify their reservation at any time prior to departure during the month of March and April.
