Songs of rivers and oceans will flood Jaspers United Church next month at the community choirs spring concert.

The 32-strong choir has been rehearsing since January and will bring a perform a selection of songs April 7.

Choir director Jane Kristenson said: You need some kind of a theme and my first idea was fire and water but it was hard finding pieces about fire, and I think we talk about fire enough in Jasper anyway.

I was amazed by how many songs that talk about water.

A lot are traditional pieces like The Water is Wide, and there are some spiritual and a couple of new ones.

She said the song that will be the finale names rivers all across Canada, including our own Athabasca.

And at this concert there will be a special guest, local poet Paulette Dube, who has written some pieces about water and will perform readings between songs.

Im looking forward to that being special to this concert, said Kristenson.

Her husband is in the choir and I have known about her. I saw some of her poetry books and was told she has done this with choirs in the past.

She was very willing to do that again.

Jasper Community Choir has been running since November 2017 and currently has 32 members aged 20 to 76.

This will be their second spring concert. It takes place April 7 at the Jasper United Church at 7 p.m. with admission by donation.

We have been rehearsing since January and are ready to share our music with the community and hope they come.
