Welcome to your Jasper Seniors Society 51°µÍø column, which appears every two weeks courtesy of the 51°µÍø.

At our first meeting of the New Year this week, Fred Kreiner, our treasurer, reported that we have 150 paid up members in our society. Our membership is growing, and we invite you to join us and participate in our outings and events.

In particular, we are looking to invest some of our funds into various projects, but we would like your input.

We want to hear from all seniors about what the Seniors Society may invest in to reap long term benefits for all seniors. One suggestion is we donate to Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge to help with funding for their generator in case of future power outages. Another is a bench for seniors outside the Seniors Lounge.

Please share this with your friends and email us with any ideas to by the end of January.

We would then have an afternoon tea held solely for identifying these future goals and would be open to all seniors.

An Indoor Walking Group has started at the Multi-Purpose Hall at the Jasper Activity Centre. The times are Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This indoor walking space is free on a drop-in basis. Go at your own pace and please wear clean, non-marking indoor shoes. We wish to thank the municipality for making this space available for the safety and health of all residents and especially seniors.

Before you walk, please call 780-852-3381 to confirm that this space is available as it is subject to other events and hall use. Thank you.

The Snow Angels program is supported by community volunteers and assists those experiencing barriers to shovelling their sidewalks during the winter months. If anyone is interested in receiving a Snow Angels sign for their yard for assistance with snow shovelling or would like more information on volunteering and how to enter for the $100 gift card, please reach out to Kacie Whyte by email at [email protected] or by phone at 780-931-3364.

A new display at the Jasper Museum and Archives will be available from Jan. 11 to Feb. 25 and is entitled Jasper Under Covers Quilt Show. It is sure to be a wonderful collection of locally made quilts – art and love combined! The museum is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A reminder that the museum welcomes all refundables given to Sheila’s Bottle Bin. Thank you!

The Community Development office of the Municipality of Jasper is on the lookout for volunteers for the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP).

It’s a fantastic opportunity to serve and empower our fellow Jasperites by helping them with their tax returns. The time and skills of our CVITP team can make a real difference in someone's life, ensuring they receive the benefits and credits they’re entitled to. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new people and give back to our wonderful community!

If you are interested in this, please reach out to [email protected] or give a call at 780-852-2100.

Support the society that supports you! Please choose Jasper Seniors Society as the donation recipient at TGP.

Anyone over 55 years of age can join the society for a nominal $10 annual fee and receive newsletters and invitations to outings and functions throughout the year. The objectives of the society, in part, are to promote the interests of seniors as well as to coordinate the services available to seniors in the community. The society manages and maintains a Seniors’ Lounge in the Activity Centre where our monthly meetings take place on the second Monday of each month.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, Feb. 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Seniors’ Lounge at the Jasper Activity Centre.

All seniors are welcome to attend and see what we are about. You can then decide if membership will be a benefit to you. If you have any ideas or wish to voice any concerns, please feel free to contact Janis Marks at 780-852-3973 or email [email protected]. Let us know how we can make everyday living better for all seniors in Jasper!
