A wildfire that left a third of the popular Rocky Mountain tourist town of Jasper, Alta., in ashes and forced tens of thousands to flee is Environment and Climate Change Canada鈥檚 most impactful weather story of 2024.

The Jasper Arena reopened on Sunday (Dec. 8), the main entrance and lobby to the Activity Centre will reopen next Monday (Dec. 18) and the Aquatic Centre will reopen on Boxing Day.

The temporary disruption is due to an inability to secure physician coverage, according to Alberta Health Services. If coverage is found, the disruption will be cancelled.

Fifty-nine per cent of Albertans with disabilities reported barriers to accessibility in public spaces, according to Statistics Canada.

Visitors and residents are encouraged to explore the exhibit "to connect with the rich history and artistry of the Indigenous communities."

"Some of the Facts" is a collection of fictionalized stories based loosely on the people who lived and worked in Jasper National Park in its early days.

The new funding will support a Residential Construction Program for Indigenous people.聽

鈥淭he site has been thoroughly assessed by our public safety specialists with Parks Canada, and it鈥檚 been deemed that there鈥檚 numerous safety hazards with the canyon and the surrounding area due to the significant impact of the wildfire in July.鈥�
