Should council support this change in service level, the municipality would submit a traffic safety plan, approved by the Jasper RCMP detachment, to the Alberta solicitor general's office.

First and second reading for the tax rate bylaw were given last week, but council failed to achieve unanimous consent to give third reading, meaning a special meeting had to be called this week so tax notices could be sent out as soon as possible.

Mayor Richard Ireland emphasized that if the Province had not promised to provide financial stabilization funding, council would have been forced to review and likely amend the budget.

This option will generate a $800,000 surplus with a third going to the recreation centre reserve, a third to a tax rate stabilization reserve and the final third to asset management. These allocations got unanimous support.

Earlier this year, the Alberta government pledged $2 million toward developing the regional transit service to help workers and displaced residents commute between Jasper and Hinton.

The program is anticipated to launch on May 1.

The staff and executives of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #31 were recognized for helping feed thousands of Jasper evacuees as well as first responders following the 2024 wildfire when residents were re-entering the townsite.

The program is estimated to create 30 additional net new units over a three-year period.

The pop-up village, which will give businesses displaced by the Jasper wildfire a place to operate this summer, is expected to launch on May long weekend.

Pine Grove Manor, an independent seniors living facility, was one of many buildings destroyed in last summer’s wildfire. The Alberta government has indicated that the facility will be rebuilt.
