Motorists will not be allowed to stop or exit off Highway 16 while travelling through Jasper National Park. There will be no washrooms or refuelling options, and motorists must obey all posted speed limits and signage.

The Municipality of Jasper said crews were not sifting through or removing debris on private property and were only mitigating immediate public hazards.

Campers will be informed how these items can be collected or asked to give permission to dispose of items damaged beyond repair. 

Smith explained during a telephone town hall on Tuesday (Aug. 6) that fire responders have played a large role in saving critical infrastructure in Jasper, such as the hospital and the wastewater treatment plant.

Doreen Zenner and son Hunter could not fathom they would never see their home again when fleeing the National Park on Monday night, but friends and family in her hometown have welcomed them with open arms and hearts.

“It’s been a powerless feeling watching the devastation in our sibling community, especially because we need to keep Banff firefighters close to home during the heightened wildfire season."

"It's a terrible thing that's happened to our neighboring community, and it is our job and our responsibility to show up and be as neighborly as possible going forward."

Three bus tours allowed Jasper evacuees to see the townsite and survey the damage on Monday (Aug. 5).

Numerous pets from Jasper are currently being housed at the Hinton and District SPCA Animal Care Centre free of charge until their owners can return home or other accommodations can be made.
